Getting into a great college is more challenging than ever; with so many qualified applicants with outstanding grades and extracurriculars, it is difficult to stand out. High school students applying to top-tier universities need to find a way to differentiate themselves amongst their peers. A personalized website showcasing a student’s unique journey, abilities, or special project can be one way to set an application apart in the eyes of college admissions committees. Odyssey College Prep helps students showcase or develop a special project. We then assist with constructing a student website to promote or feature that project. Contact our college consultants today to begin the process.

Students who have personalized websites show that they have diverse interests outside of the regular school curriculum

The college admissions process can be extremely frustrating; each college has their own limited application process which might not give a student the opportunity to truly show off the best parts of their personality. What makes applying for top tier colleges even harder is that the entire pool of applicants have stellar grades, participate in sports, volunteer in the community, and are otherwise well-rounded. Standing out amongst the sea of over-achievers can be tough.

A personalized website can help an applicant stand out amongst the crowd, but it  is not simply a regurgitation of your college application. In fact, if done correctly, the college admissions team should not think that this website was created simply to get into college. Rather, a student’s website is an opportunity for the student to highlight and market a special project that is separate from school, and which is important to them. Or, if they do not already have a special project, it gives them the opportunity to create something, and then build the website around it.

For example, if a student is very into art or photography, a website can be built to show off their projects, create larger digital curations, and explain the larger meaning of the art collection. Or if a student is interested in creative writing, their website might be an opportunity to publish their poems, short stories, or blog articles. Another example might be if a student is interested in engineering, they might invent a small machine, or create videos of themselves working on the project along the way. Personalized websites may also address or focus on specific scholarships the student may be applying for, such as diversity scholarships having to do with gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or race. Students may already have some material they would like included that is currently posted to social media sites such as Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok. Students can use appropriate photos and/or video on their personalized website, without inadvertently steering college admissions to personal social sites that might not be appropriate to be viewed for application purposes.

Our college prep college consultants help students develop appropriate ideas and we assist with building a website around those ideas

women building website

It is understandable that not all students have a ready-made topic that they are prepared to build a website around. That is okay; our college consultants can help students generate ideas until they find a project, they feel passionate about. During your initial call, our consultant will ask your student questions regarding where they want to go to school, what they want to major in, if they are interested in joining any special clubs or athletics, or if there are any internships they hope to obtain. Once the consultant understands more about what the student hopes to accomplish in college, they can help them brainstorm ideas that will help them get a leg up on proving to admissions officers that they have a talent and passion for the field which they are applying to be a part of.

Once the student knows what they want to showcase on their website, Odyssey College Prep will take care of the rest. After an in-depth discussion with the student regarding what content should appear on the site, our team will generate content that best explains the purpose of the site. The student will submit all original material that they wish to go on their site including pictures, videos, etc. Our web developers will build a secure site, hosted on our server, that will be searchable by search engines such as Google and Bing. The website will be mobile friendly, will load quickly, and will look professional. All of our websites are custom designed, we do not use template builder sites, which can have difficulties and limitations on the backend and make them appear amateurish. All sites will be hosted for one year on our server and may be renewed or canceled after the one year.
